A depositor's claim against a licensed bank. Protection depends on the prudential regime and the deposit-protection mechanism provided by law.
Not segregated custodyAccounts and balances
The word “balance”, by itself, does not define what a person legally owns. A bank deposit, a balance held by a payment institution, an asset in custody, a claim against a third party and a simple internal record may have different protections and risks.
Four situations that must not be mixed
Value held by a non-bank payment institution. It must have its own safeguarding regime and must not be advertised as a covered bank deposit when it is not one.
Specific protectionA client's asset held by a third party, with segregation and records appropriate to its nature.
Client propertyAn interface item or operational-control record produces only the legal effect actually supported by its official source and the applicable legal regime.
